Feiring AS, one of Norway’s largest providers of aggregates, asphalt, transport and sustainable earthworks material management, has put driverless wheel loaders into operation at a Norwegian quarry. Quarry operators face daily exposure to noise, dust and intense vibration, while the industry also faces labour shortages. Feiring, which operates at several locations across Norway, is using AI-controlled machinery to address these challenges and allow operators to take on other tasks.

“Operators who previously drove the wheel loaders now carry out other tasks at the quarry that would previously have required operations to stop. Our goal is to improve safety and productivity. This is how quarries will be operated in the future,”

Roar Aaserud, Head of Machinery at Feiring AS

HIVE’s technology is installed directly onto existing machines, allowing quarry operators to introduce autonomy without replacing their fleets or making extensive infrastructure changes. Sensors and an AI module connect each machine to a coordinated, autonomous system. From day one, the machine can operate under supervision, with no driver in the cab.

“We are seeing strong interest across the industry in how AI can control machines and increase productivity. We are very proud to have Feiring on board. Quarry operators and aggregates producers are a core market for us, and Feiring has approached this with a level of commitment and long-term thinking that shows they understand what the technology can actually do for them,”

Christoffer Jørgensvåg, CEO and co-founder of HIVE

Feiring joins a growing number of companies using HIVE in Norwegian industrial operations. Fertiliser producer Yara already uses the technology at its Herøya facility in Norway. Road maintenance company Presis Vegdrift uses the system to clear snow and rocks from exposed Norwegian mountain passes. In spring 2026, construction company Veidekke announced plans to test driverless machines in tunnelling and quarrying operations.
